4/20 didn’t start in Amsterdam. It started 20 minutes north of here.
In 1971, five friends at San Rafael High School — they called themselves the Waldos — used “4:20” as a code time to meet up after sports practice for a search-and-find adventure that involved a treasure map and an abandoned cannabis crop. The map didn’t pan out. The phrase did.
From the halls of San Rafael High the term spread through the Grateful Dead’s touring crew, then into High Times magazine in 1991, and eventually into every cannabis culture on earth. 4/20 is a Bay Area invention — every bit as local as the cable car or the burrito.
San Francisco picked up the torch from there: Brownie Mary handing out cannabis edibles to AIDS patients at SF General in the ’80s. Dennis Peron and Prop 215 making California the first state to legalize medical cannabis in 1996. This city has been at the center of cannabis culture for forty years. 4/20 is the busiest day of the cannabis year. Two strategies:
• Shop the weekend before. Most 4/20 deals run from Saturday through Tuesday. Saturday and Sunday are noticeably calmer.
• Come in early on 4/20. We open at 11am sharp. The first hour is the smoothest.Avoid 4–7pm on April 20 itself unless you enjoy a line out the door.
