How Cannabis Deals Work in San Francisco

First time shopping dispensary deals in SF? Here’s the short version: how the math works, what to expect after tax, and why North Beach pricing beats the Wharf.

The three deal formats

Buy 2 Get 1 (BOGO) is the most common promotion — it works out to roughly 33% off when you buy three of the same-priced item. Percentage-off deals (20 to 50% off) apply to a brand or category but often exclude premium products. Bundle pricing pairs complementary items at a combined price below the sum of the parts.

What you’ll actually pay after tax

California adds a 15% cannabis excise tax on top of San Francisco’s ~8.625% local sales tax. Stack those and expect roughly 24% added at checkout. A $50 eighth becomes about $62 out the door. Rule of thumb: add a quarter to any advertised pre-tax price to estimate your total.

Discounts don’t stack

Nearly every SF dispensary applies a one-deal-per-item rule. You can’t combine a daily BOGO with a medical card discount on the same product. Use the deeper discount on higher-priced items and the medical or veteran discount on the rest of your cart. Our budtenders will run the math both ways if you ask.

North Beach vs Wharf pricing

Storefronts directly abutting Fisherman’s Wharf tend to stock higher-margin SKUs and run shallower promotions because their foot traffic skews tourist-heavy. Neighborhood dispensaries serving locals, like ours at 899 Columbus Ave in North Beach (a short walk from Chinatown and Russian Hill), run tighter pricing because we compete for repeat visits. If you’re staying at a Wharf hotel, the ten-minute walk down Columbus is usually worth 20 to 30% in savings.
