Powell-Mason from California & Mason
From the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, or Stanford Court, walk one to two blocks downhill on Mason. Board the Powell-Mason cable car at California & Mason heading north. Stay on through the steep descent and exit at Mason & Filbert. Walk three blocks east on Filbert to Columbus, then one block north. The cable car ride down the Hill is one of the best three minutes in San Francisco.
Down Mason or Powell to Columbus
From the top of Nob Hill, walk north on Mason or Powell. The grade is steep at first but the views over North Beach are why people come to San Francisco. Cross Broadway, jog east at Filbert to Columbus, and we are two blocks north. The walk down is significantly easier than the walk back, so plan to take the cable car back up if you are bringing anything heavy.
Lyft or Uber down the Hill
From any Nob Hill address, set the destination to 899 Columbus Ave. Drivers usually take Powell or Mason down the Hill, then jog east to Columbus. Five minutes door to door outside rush hour. The trip is short enough that surge rarely matters. Door drop-off on the Columbus side, just past the corner of Lombard.
Down the Hill, free parking after 6 PM
From the Fairmont garage or Stanford Court drive, take Mason or Powell north down the Hill. Cross Broadway, continue past the cable car terminus to Filbert, then right on Columbus. Park on Mason between Greenwich and Lombard. Two-hour metered parking is free after 6 PM throughout North Beach.

Does the Powell-Mason cable car go to Gemme Verdi?
Almost. The Powell-Mason terminates at Bay & Taylor, four blocks from our door. The closer stop for our shop is Mason & Filbert, where you exit before the terminus. Walk three blocks east on Filbert to Columbus, then one block north. The cable car runs every 7 minutes from 6 AM to 1 AM Friday and Saturday, until midnight other nights.
Can I walk down to North Beach from the top of Nob Hill?
Yes. The walk down Mason or Powell from California Street to Columbus is 0.6 miles and takes 12 to 15 minutes. The grade is steep at first then levels out at Broadway. The walk back uphill is significantly harder, so most regulars take the cable car back up after picking up. Bay Wheels e-bike stations at the bottom and top of the Hill are also an option.

Is North Beach safe to walk to from Nob Hill at night?
Yes. The Mason and Powell corridors from California down through Broadway and into North Beach are well-lit and busy until past 11 PM most nights, past midnight on weekends. The Powell-Mason cable car is also a comfortable option and runs until 1 AM Friday and Saturday.
